1797 1864 Archbishop Hughes

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the noble and resolute visage of John Hughes (1797-1864), the esteemed Catholic Archbishop of New York during the mid-19th century. Hughes was born in Ireland in 1797 and immigrated to the United States in 1820, eventually settling in Baltimore, Maryland. He was ordained a priest in 1823 and later became the Bishop of Philadelphia in 1842. In 1842, Hughes was appointed as the first native-born American and the first Irish-American Archbishop of New York, a position he held until his death in 1864. During his tenure in New York, Hughes played a significant role in the growth and development of the Catholic Church in the city. He oversaw the construction of numerous churches and schools, and was a vocal advocate for the rights of immigrants, particularly the Irish, who were facing discrimination and prejudice during this period. Hughes was also a prominent figure in the political and social scene of New York City. He was a close ally of Mayor William Frederick Havemeyer and was instrumental in securing the passage of the New York City Charter of 1838, which granted religious freedom to all citizens. Hughes was also a strong supporter of the Temperance Movement and was known for his efforts to promote moral values and social justice in the city. Despite facing numerous challenges during his time in New York, including anti-Catholic riots and financial difficulties, Hughes remained a steadfast leader and a beloved figure among the Catholic community. This portrait, taken during his later years, captures the dignity and determination that defined his leadership and his enduring legacy in the history of the Catholic Church in America.
