1790 1866 Gibson Sculptor

EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "John Gibson, Renowned 19th Century British Sculptor" John Gibson (1790-1866), a prominent figure in the world of British sculpture during the 19th century, is depicted in this evocative portrait. Born on March 17, 1790, in London, Gibson's artistic talents were evident from an early age. He studied under the tutelage of the renowned neoclassical sculptor, John Flaxman, and later traveled to Italy to further hone his skills. Gibson's sculptures were characterized by their graceful forms, intricate details, and exquisite craftsmanship. He is best known for his life-size marble figure of "The Death of Marat," which he created in 1833. This masterpiece, inspired by the famous painting by Jacques-Louis David, is now housed in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Gibson's works were highly sought after by the aristocracy and the royal family, including Queen Victoria, who commissioned him to create several sculptures for Windsor Castle. His other notable works include "The Three Graces," "The Bacchantes," and "The Three Fates." Despite his success, Gibson faced numerous challenges throughout his career. The economic downturn in the 1840s led to a decline in commissions, forcing him to sell many of his works at greatly reduced prices. However, his reputation as a master sculptor endured, and he continued to produce works until his death on February 2, 1866. This photograph captures the essence of John Gibson, a man whose passion for art and unwavering dedication to his craft left an indelible mark on the history of British sculpture.
