1755 1826 Flaxman Sculptor

EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "John Flaxman: A Master Sculptor of the Neoclassical Era" John Flaxman (1755-1826), a renowned British sculptor, is depicted in this portrait. Born on December 11, 1755, in Leeds, England, Flaxman's artistic talent was evident from an early age. He initially studied under local artists before moving to London in 1775 to further his education at the Royal Academy. Flaxman's career took off in the late 18th century, a time when Neoclassicism, with its emphasis on the ideals of ancient Greece and Rome, dominated the art world. Flaxman's mastery of this style is evident in his intricately detailed and expressive works, which often depicted mythological and biblical subjects. One of Flaxman's most notable achievements was his collaboration with the poet William Wordsworth on a series of reliefs for the poet's tomb. The reliefs, which were executed between 1805 and 1810, depict scenes from Wordsworth's poetry and showcase Flaxman's exceptional skill in conveying emotion and movement through sculpture. Flaxman's influence extended beyond the realm of sculpture. He was a founding member of the Royal Society of British Sculptors and played a significant role in the establishment of the Royal Academy Schools. His students included many prominent artists of the time, including Thomas Bock and John Gibson. Despite his many accomplishments, Flaxman's later years were marked by financial difficulties. He died on December 23, 1826, in London, leaving behind a legacy as one of the greatest sculptors of the Neoclassical era. This portrait, captured in the late 18th or early 19th century, offers a glimpse into the life and career of a man whose work continues to inspire and captivate audiences today.
