John Caius (1510-1573), a prominent English medical figure and the founder of Caius College in Cambridge, is depicted in this historical portrait. Born in Fen Drayton, near Cambridge, Caius studied at the University of Cambridge and later at the University of Padua in Italy, where he deepened his knowledge of medicine and anatomy. He returned to England in 1542 and was appointed physician to King Henry VIII and later to Queen Mary I. Caius's dedication to education led him to establish Caius College in 1575, just two years after his death. The college was founded with the intention of providing scholarships for students who could not afford to pay for their education. Caius College is renowned for its academic excellence and has produced numerous distinguished alumni, including the mathematician Isaac Newton. This portrait of Caius, likely painted during his lifetime, showcases his scholarly appearance with his fur-lined robe and the books and scrolls surrounding him. The inscription at the bottom of the image reads "Ioannes Caius M.D.," indicating his status as a Doctor of Medicine. Caius's legacy continues to live on through Caius College and his significant contributions to the fields of medicine and education in England during the Tudor period.
