He was appointed Solicitor General in 1834 and served as Attorney General from 1835 to 1839. In 1841, Lyndhurst became Lord Chancellor, a position he held until 1846. During his tenure as Lord Chancellor, Lyndhurst played a key role in the passage of several important pieces of legislation, including the Repeal of the Test Acts and the Roman Catholic Relief Act. He was also instrumental in the establishment of the Law Commission, which aimed to modernize and simplify English law.
