1371 1414 1435 Ermine Hargrave Jeanne Joanna Naples Sicily

EDITORS COMMENTS
Joanna II of Naples, also known as Joanna the Mad or Jeanne de Naples, was a remarkable woman who ruled the Kingdom of Naples from 1414 until her death in 1435. Born in Sicily in 1371, Joanna was the daughter of King Ladislaus of Durazzo and Queen Joan I of Naples. After a turbulent reign by her successors, Joanna was called upon to restore order in Naples at the age of 43. This stunning print depicts Joanna II in her regal attire, adorned with the ermine fur, a symbol of royalty and purity. The intricate detail of her costume, from the rich fabrics to the delicate embroidery, reflects the opulence of the Naples court during her reign. The ermine fur, which is seen draped over her shoulders and around her neck, was a symbol of her royal status and was believed to ward off evil. Joanna II was known for her intelligence, beauty, and strong will. She faced numerous challenges during her reign, including rebellions, invasions, and political intrigue. Despite these challenges, she managed to maintain control of her kingdom and leave a lasting impact on Naples' history. Her reign is remembered for its cultural and artistic achievements, including the patronage of humanist scholars and the construction of the Royal Palace of Naples. Joanna II's reign came to an end in 1435 when she was succeeded by her grandson, Alfonso I of Naples. Her legacy, however, continues to be celebrated in Naples and beyond as a symbol of strength, resilience, and determination in the face of adversity.
