EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image captures the moment of arrest of George Jeffreys, 1st Baron Jeffreys, also known as Judge Jeffreys, in 1688. Born in 1648, Jeffreys rose to prominence as a judge during the reign of King Charles II, earning the nickname "Hanging Judge" for his role in the bloody Assizes of the Bloody Assizes of 1685. However, when Monmouth's Rebellion broke out in 1685, Jeffreys' loyalty to the crown was questioned, and he went into hiding. In this photograph from Mary Evans Picture Library, Jeffreys is depicted attempting to flee the country, disguised as a sailor at Wapping, a district in the East End of London. The image, taken from the historical archives, captures the sense of intrigue and danger surrounding the fugitive judge. Jeffreys' disguise is not convincing, as evidenced by the prominent white collar and wig peeking out from under his sailor's hat. Despite his attempts to escape, Jeffreys was recognized and seized by loyalist soldiers. He was later brought before King James II, who pardoned him and allowed him to keep his title and position as Lord Chief Justice. However, Jeffreys' reputation as a harsh and unjust judge would follow him for the rest of his life, and he was eventually impeached and removed from office in 1689. This photograph offers a glimpse into a pivotal moment in English history, showcasing the intrigue and drama of the late 17th century. The image is a testament to the power and influence of the judiciary during this period, as well as the complex political landscape of the time.
