EDITORS COMMENTS
Jean Comte de Dunois, also known as Jean de Dunois or Jean le Batarde d'Orléans, was a French soldier and military leader who played a pivotal role in the 100 Years War between France and England. Born in 1403, Dunois was the illegitimate son of Charles, Duke of Orléans, and his mistress, Isabelle de Bavière. Despite his illegitimate status, Dunois rose through the ranks of the French military to become one of the most successful commanders against the English during the protracted conflict. This striking print depicts Jean Comte de Dunois in his armor, a formidable figure ready for battle. The image captures the intensity and determination of the French soldier, who was known for his bravery and strategic acumen. Dunois' military career began in earnest in 1420 when he joined his father's army to support King Charles VII of France during the Battle of Agincourt. Despite the French defeat, Dunois continued to serve his country, leading numerous successful campaigns against the English. One of Dunois' most notable victories came in 1429 when he recaptured the city of Orléans, which had been under English siege for months. The relief of Orléans marked a turning point in the war, and Dunois became a national hero in France. He continued to serve his country until his death in 1468. This print is a testament to the enduring legacy of Jean Comte de Dunois, a French soldier who defied the odds and became a symbol of French resistance during the 100 Years War. His bravery and military prowess continue to be celebrated in French history.
