EDITORS COMMENTS
In this exquisite handcolored lithograph from the 19th century, we find a depiction of Jean-Antoine de Mesmes, Seigneur of Irval, Count of Avaux, as painted by Philippe de Champaigne in 1653. The nobleman is shown in a grand and ornate setting, dressed in the height of 17th-century fashion. Jean-Antoine de Mesmes (1608-1675) was a French aristocrat who held significant political and military power during the reign of Louis XIV. He served as the governor of the Duchy of Lorraine and was a member of the French Academy of Sciences. In this portrait, de Mesmes is depicted wearing the robes of a count, adorned with intricate gold embroidery and a velvet collar. His attire is completed with a lace jabot at his neck, a ruff at his throat, and a three-cornered hat with a feather adornment. The painting itself was executed by the renowned French artist Philippe de Champaigne, who was known for his religious and portrait works. The handcolored illustration and lithography were produced by Edmond Lechevallier-Chevignard and lithographed by A. Didier, L. Flameng, and F. Laguillermie for the publication "Costumes historiques des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siecles" (Historical costumes of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries) by Georges Duplessis in Paris in 1867. This stunning image provides a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the French aristocracy during the 17th century, offering a fascinating look at the fashion and style of the time. The intricate details of de Mesmes' attire and the rich colors of the lithograph serve as a testament to the artistic skill and craftsmanship of the time.
