By 1778, he had been appointed as the captain of HMS Swiftsure, a third-rate ship of the line. During the American Revolution, Luttrell distinguished himself in several engagements, most notably in the Battle of Ushant in 1778, where he commanded HMS Intrepid. His strategic acumen and fearlessness in the face of the enemy earned him the admiration of his men and the respect of his superiors. Luttrell's career was not without its challenges, however. In 1781, he was court-martialed for his role in the failed attack on the French fleet at St. Lucia. Despite the setback, Luttrell continued to serve with distinction, and in 1787, he was appointed as the governor of Jamaica. Tragically, he died in office just a year later, likely due to illness.
