EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts James Knox Polk (1795-1849), the 11th President of the United States, during his tenure from 1845 to 1849. Painted by George Peter Alexander Healy (1813-1894) in 1846, the portrait is now proudly displayed at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C. Born in Pineville, North Carolina, Polk rose to prominence as a Democratic politician and served as Speaker of the House of Representatives from Tennessee from 1835 to 1839. He was a key figure in the Jacksonian Democracy movement, which advocated for expanding democracy and states' rights. Polk's presidency was marked by several significant accomplishments. He led the United States in the Mexican-American War, which resulted in the acquisition of California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and parts of Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas, and Oklahoma. Polk also oversaw the passage of the Treaty of Oregon with Britain, which established the 49th parallel as the boundary between the two nations. In this portrait, Polk is depicted wearing a simple white shirt, signifying his humble background and commitment to the common man. His serious expression and piercing gaze convey a sense of determination and focus, reflecting the intensity with which he approached his political career. The painting captures the essence of a man who dedicated himself to serving his country and expanding its territorial reach during a pivotal moment in American history.
