EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning miniature painting depicts James III of Mallorca, also known as Jaume III or Jaume el Just (James the Just), who ruled the Kingdom of Mallorca from 1324 to 1349. Born in 1315, James was the eldest son of King Sancho I of Mallorca and his second wife, Alamanda de Luna. He ascended to the throne at the age of nine following his father's death and was later crowned in Palma de Mallorca in 1325. During his reign, James III is best known for his efforts to strengthen the Kingdom of Mallorca's autonomy from the Crown of Aragon and to promote peace and prosperity within his realm. He also granted numerous privileges and freedoms to the inhabitants of Mallorca, which were recorded in the "Llibre de franqueses i privilegis del Regne de Mallorca" (Book of truth and privilege from Majorca's reign). This book, which is now housed in the Archive of the Kingdom of Majorca, contains over 1,000 documents that detail the rights and privileges granted by James III to various individuals and institutions. This particular image of James III is a beautiful example of Gothic art, which was a popular style during the late Middle Ages in Europe. The painting's intricate details and vibrant colors showcase the artistic skill and craftsmanship of the period. The king is depicted wearing a richly decorated robe and a crown adorned with precious stones, symbolizing his regal status and power. Overall, this painting is a valuable historical and artistic treasure that provides insight into the life and reign of James III of Mallorca and the rich cultural heritage of the Kingdom of Mallorca during the Middle Ages.
