EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "James Baron Forbes, 17th Lord Forbes (1765-1843), Scottish Military Commander" James Baron Forbes, 17th Lord Forbes, was a prominent Scottish military figure during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Born on October 13, 1765, Forbes was the eldest son of Arthur Forbes, 16th Lord Forbes, and his wife, Lady Anne Ogilvy. He succeeded to the title and estates upon his father's death in 1775. Forbes' military career began in 1781 when he joined the British Army as an ensign in the 23rd Regiment of Foot. He quickly rose through the ranks, and by 1793, he had been promoted to lieutenant colonel and given command of the 102nd Regiment of Foot. Forbes saw action in the Dutch War (1780-1784) and the French Revolutionary Wars (1792-1802), earning a reputation as a capable and brave commander. In 1803, Forbes was appointed governor of the British colony of Trinidad in the West Indies. He served in this role until 1805, during which time he oversaw the defense of the colony against French invasion. Forbes' successful defense of Trinidad earned him a knighthood and the title of Sir James Forbes. Returning to Scotland in 1805, Forbes was appointed aide-de-camp to King George III. He continued to serve in various military and administrative roles until his retirement in 1825. Forbes died on April 23, 1843, at the age of 77. This photograph captures James Baron Forbes in later life, dressed in the uniform of a Scottish military commander. The image serves as a reminder of Forbes' significant contributions to Scottish and British military history. His leadership and bravery in battle, as well as his administrative abilities, earned him a distinguished place in the annals of Scottish military history.
