Born in 1667, she was the daughter of Henry Bennet, 1st Earl of Arlington, and his wife, Frances Teresa Stuart. Isabella's marriage to Henry, the first Duke of Grafton, was a politically advantageous one, as the Duke was a close confidant of King Charles II. The union took place in 1684, when Isabella was just 17 years old. The portrait showcases Isabella's refined beauty and sophistication. She is dressed in the latest fashion of the day, with an intricately embroidered gown and a lace-trimmed mantilla. Her hair is styled in an elaborate updo, adorned with pearls and diamonds. The Duchess' piercing blue eyes gaze out at the viewer with a confident and regal expression. Isabella's life was not without tragedy. Isabella, Duchess of Grafton, passed away in 1723, leaving behind a legacy as a gracious and influential woman of the Restoration era.
