In this historic photograph, taken on November 26, 1923, renowned British archaeologist Howard Carter (1874-1939) and his team of companions stand in awe before the newly discovered sarcophagus of Pharaoh Tutankhamen in his tomb deep within the Valley of the Kings, near Luxor, Egypt. The tomb, which had been sealed for over 3,000 years, was discovered by Carter and his workmen on November 4, 1922, and the world was stunned by the incredible preservation of its contents. Carter, who had been working in Egypt since 1891, had been searching for Tutankhamen's tomb since 1907.
