HMS Marlborough: A Symbol of Naval Power in the 1920s This photograph showcases HMS Marlborough's impressive X and Y twin gun turrets, each fitted with formidable BL 13.5-inch Mk V naval guns. The Iron Duke-class battleship, named after the renowned British military leader John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, was constructed between 1912 and 1914 at Devonport Royal Dockyard. Commissioned just prior to the First World War, HMS Marlborough was initially assigned to the Home Fleet but later joined the Mediterranean Fleet after the war's end. During the tumultuous 1919-1920 period, she played a pivotal role in the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War in the Black Sea. HMS Marlborough's presence was also felt in the Greco-Turkish War. In this image, the X and Y turrets, located towards the stern of the battleship, dominate the quarterdeck. The towering structures housed the massive guns, which could fire a projectile weighing over 1,000 pounds at a muzzle velocity of approximately 2,600 feet per second. The turrets were a testament to the technological prowess and military might of the British Royal Navy in the 1920s. The Iron Duke-class battleships, including HMS Marlborough, were a significant part of the Royal Navy's fleet during the interwar period. Their presence served as a deterrent against potential aggressors and maintained Britain's status as a global maritime power. This photograph offers a glimpse into the rich naval history of the 1920s, showcasing the grandeur and power of HMS Marlborough.
