Admiral Aide Battleship Beauvoir Bows Brock Duke Class Iron Marlborough Mediterranean Osmond 1923
EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, Sir Osmond de Beauvoir Brock, Commander-in-Chief of the Mediterranean Fleet and future Admiral of the Fleet, is about to take possession of his cherished telescope from a devoted Aide, who bows deeply in submission. The year is 1923, and the setting is aboard the HMS Marlborough, an Iron Duke-class battleship of the British Royal Navy. Named in honor of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, this magnificent vessel was constructed at Devonport Royal Dockyard between January 1912 and June 1914 and entered service just prior to the First World War. Assigned to the Mediterranean Fleet following the war, the HMS Marlborough played a significant role in various international conflicts, including the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War in the Black Sea (1919-1920) and the Greco-Turkish War. In this image, Sir Brock, a decorated naval officer with the honors of GCB, KCMG, KCVO, exudes authority and confidence as he reaches out to accept the telescope from his attentive Aide. A Jack Tar, a nonchalant sailor, observes the scene with a look of complete credulity on his face, adding a touch of authenticity to this evocative moment in naval history.
