HMS Habbakuk in section

Illustration showing a cross section of the top secret design for HMS Habbakuk a giant aircraft-carrier built of ice and wood pulp, which was proposed as a secret weapon in the Second World War. This project was put forward by Geoffrey Pyke in 1942, but was never built as the practicalities involved were too much for the British war effort. The system of construction and propulsion, the crews accomodation, air craft hangars and defensive armament are detailed

EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "HMS Habbakuk: The Unbuilt Ice-and-Wood Pulp Giant Aircraft Carrier of World War II" 2.. This illustration showcases a top-secret design for HMS Habbakuk, an extraordinary aircraft carrier concept proposed during World War II by British inventor Geoffrey Pyke in 1942. Unlike conventional vessels, Habbakuk was intended to be constructed from ice and wood pulp, making it an innovative and intriguing weapon of the time. The cross-section image reveals the intricacies of this groundbreaking design. The system of construction consisted of a 1,000-foot-long ice hull, reinforced with wood pulp and covered in a protective layer of ice. The propulsion system was designed to use steam-heated water to melt the ice hull, which would then be refrozen as the ship moved forward. The carrier accommodated a crew of around 3,000 men, with living quarters, mess decks, and recreational facilities. Aircraft hangars were located at the front and rear of the ship, allowing for the deployment and retrieval of planes. Defensive armament included anti-aircraft guns and torpedo tubes, ensuring the protection of this unconventional warship. Despite the ambitious vision, the practicalities of constructing and operating such a vessel proved too challenging for the British war effort. The project, known as Pykrete after its inventor, was eventually abandoned. Nevertheless, HMS Habbakuk remains an intriguing footnote in the history of maritime engineering and World War II innovation.
