Hinged brass tobacco tin - East Yorkshire Regiment
A small hinged brass tobacco tin engraved on reverse - (2856 Private) Arthur C. Stephenson and dated 1918. Together with an engraved badge of the East Yorkshire Regiment with the place names of Merris and Nieppe. The 31st Division beat off the assaults of German divisions in that location on 12th-14th April 1918 and according to Ray Westlakes Kitcheners Army, the 31st Division was made up of the 92nd, 93rd and 94th Brigades. The 92nd Brigade contained, among others, the the 11th Battalion The East Yorkshire Regiment (2nd Hull) so it would seem that Stephenson was one of Kitcheners Army. Trench Art

The East Yorkshire Regiment's connection to these locations is significant, as they were part of the 31st Division that successfully repelled assaults from German divisions in the area on the 12th-14th of April 1918. The 31st Division, as detailed in Ray Westlakes' "Kitchener's Army," consisted of the 92nd, 93rd, and 94th Brigades.
