EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored woodblock print showcases the elegant beauty of Higan cherry blossoms, or Prunus pendula, as depicted by the renowned Japanese artist Kono Bairei. Part of the "One Hundred Varieties of Flowers" series, this work was published in Tokyo by Yamada in 1901. The intricate design and vibrant colors bring the delicate petals of the Higan cherry blossom to life, capturing the essence of the fleeting bloom. Higan cherry blossoms, also known as early-blooming cherry blossoms, are a beloved symbol of the changing seasons in Japan. Unlike the more famous sakura (cherry blossoms), which bloom in late March or early April, Higan cherry blossoms begin to bloom in February, providing a welcome burst of color during the winter months. The short-lived blossoms, which last only a few days, are celebrated for their delicate pink hue and sweet fragrance. The art of woodblock printing, or ukiyo-e, reached its peak during the Edo period (1603-1868), and Kono Bairei was one of its most celebrated masters. His works, which often featured flowers and landscapes, were known for their meticulous attention to detail and rich, vibrant colors. This print is a testament to his skill and the enduring appeal of traditional Japanese art.
