Herzogin Cecilie nearing Falmouth, Cornwall

The Herzogin Cecilie, a German four mast barque (Windjammer), named after German Crown Princess Duchess Cecilie of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (1886-1954), nearing Falmouth, Cornwall, after one of her many races round the world. On her final race in 1936 she ran onto some rocks, was beached near Salcombe, and was gradually broken up by the waves. The remains are still on the seabed."

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the majestic German four-masted barque, Herzogin Cecilie, gracefully approaching the picturesque harbor of Falmouth, Cornwall, in the United Kingdom. Named after German Crown Princess Duchess Cecilie of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (1886-1954), this historic windjammer was a renowned participant in numerous races around the world during the 1920s and 1930s. The Herzogin Cecilie, with her elegant masts and billowing sails, epitomizes the golden age of sailing. Her sleek design and powerful rigging allowed her to traverse the vast oceans with ease and grace. In her final race in 1936, however, she met an unfortunate end when she ran aground on some rocks near Salcombe. Despite valiant efforts to save her, the waves gradually broke up the once magnificent vessel, leaving her remains on the seabed as a testament to her storied past. This image, taken in the 1930s, captures the Herzogin Cecilie in her prime, with her national flag proudly flying high as she sails towards her next adventure. The photograph not only showcases the beauty and grandeur of this historic vessel but also transports us back in time to an era when wind-powered ships ruled the seas.
