EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait by the renowned Spanish painter Sebastián de Herrera Barnuevo (1619-1671) showcases a young Charles II of Spain (1661-1700) surrounded by his ancestors. Painted around 1667, the artwork is a testament to the rich history and lineage of the Spanish monarchy. The young Charles II is depicted in an upright, colorful oil painting, bathed in daylight that illuminates his features. His curious gaze is fixed on something beyond the canvas, a hint of the strong leadership that would later define his reign. The wall behind Charles II is adorned with four additional portraits of his ancestors. To the left, Mariana of Austria (1634-1696), the future queen consort of Spain, is depicted in a portrait by Carreño de Miranda. To the right, the regal figure of Philip IV (1605-1665) gazes out from his portrait by Diego Velázquez. Above Charles II, the Infanta Margarita (1637-1661) is portrayed in a bust form by Pompey Leoni. Completing the lineage, a bust of Charles V (1500-1558) is also present. This vertical composition not only highlights the familial connections but also the artistic mastery of Herrera Barnuevo. The interplay of light and color, as well as the intricate details, are a testament to the painter's skill. The portrait is a valuable addition to the Lázaro Galdiano Foundation in Madrid, Spain, an autonomous community, where it continues to inspire and educate visitors about the history of the Spanish monarchy.
