EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures Henry Clay, an American statesman and orator, in his thirties during the early 19th century. Born on April 12, 1777, in Hanover County, Virginia, Clay would go on to become one of the most influential political figures in American history. Clay's political career began in earnest in 1803 when he was elected to the United States House of Representatives as a Republican. He served in the House until 1811, and during this time, he developed a reputation as a skilled debater and a strong advocate for states' rights. In 1815, Clay returned to the House after a brief hiatus from politics and quickly became a leader of the War Hawks, a group of congressmen who advocated for war against Great Britain in response to British attacks on American ships. Clay's eloquent speeches in favor of war helped to build support for the conflict that would eventually lead to the War of 1812. After the war, Clay turned his attention to the issue of slavery. He believed that the expansion of slavery into new territories was a threat to the unity of the country and advocated for the passage of the Missouri Compromise, which sought to balance the power of slave and free states. Despite his political successes, Clay faced numerous setbacks and disappointments throughout his career. He ran for president three times but was never able to win the election. However, he continued to serve in the Senate until his death on June 29, 1852. This portrait, taken in Clay's thirties, captures the energy and determination of a man who would go on to shape American history. With his piercing gaze and confident posture, Clay looks every bit the statesman he would become.
