EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite portrait captures the enigmatic beauty and allure of Catherine Henriette de Balzac d'Entragues, Marquise de Verneuil, who was the mistress of Henri IV, King of France, from 1599 until his assassination in 1610. Born in 1579, Henriette was the daughter of a noble family from the Duchy of Burgundy. Her striking features, with her piercing blue eyes, elegant neckline, and intricately woven lace collar, would have undoubtedly caught the eye of the king. Henri IV, who was known for his many amorous affairs, met Henriette when she was just a young woman. Their relationship began when she was only 19 years old, and it is said that he was immediately captivated by her charm and grace. The king bestowed upon her the title of Marquise de Verneuil, and she became one of the most influential women at the royal court. Despite the controversy surrounding their relationship, Henriette remained a loyal companion to the king until his untimely death in 1610. She continued to hold a prominent position at the court of Louis XIII, Henri IV's successor, and was known for her intelligence, wit, and political acumen. This portrait, which dates from the late 16th or early 17th century, provides a tantalizing glimpse into the life of a woman who played a significant role in the history of France. The intricately detailed clothing and the delicate rendering of Henriette's features serve as a reminder of the opulence and elegance of the French court during this period. The portrait also underscores the complex and often scandalous nature of royal relationships in the late Renaissance era.
