EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolor painting, created by German naturalist George Forster during Captain James Cook's second voyage to explore the uncharted southern continent between 1772 and 1775, depicts the distinctive New Zealand pigeon, Hemiphaga novaeseelandiae, also known as the Kereru. Forster meticulously rendered the bird's vibrant plumage, with its iridescent blue-green sheen, and intricate anatomical details, including its large, distinctive bill and powerful legs. Forster labeled the painting as Columba argentera, a name later corrected to Hemiphaga novaeseelandiae. The painting was produced during a time of great exploration and discovery, when Europeans were first encountering the unique wildlife of Australasia. The work is a testament to the spirit of adventure and scientific curiosity that fueled the expeditions of Cook and Forster. This exquisite illustration was created by the skilled hand of Johann Georg Adam Forster, who accompanied Cook as a naturalist on his voyages. The painting is a valuable historical record of the natural world and a beautiful work of art in its own right.
