EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the moment of coronation for Haile Selassie I, the legendary Emperor of Ethiopia, on November 2, 1930, in Addis Ababa. Born as Ras Tafari in 1892, Haile Selassie rose through the ranks of the Ethiopian political and military hierarchy, eventually becoming regent in 1916 and then emperor in 1930. His coronation was a grand affair, attended by thousands of Ethiopians and international dignitaries, including representatives from the League of Nations. Haile Selassie's reign is marked by significant modernization efforts, including the establishment of a national army, the expansion of education and healthcare systems, and the adoption of a new constitution. He is also revered by the Rastafarian movement, which originated in Jamaica in the 1930s, as a divine figure. The movement's belief in Selassie's divinity stems from his Amharic name, which translates to "Power of the Trinity." Despite his accomplishments, Haile Selassie's rule was not without challenges. Ethiopia faced numerous invasions and occupations, including the Italian occupation from 1936 to 1941. Haile Selassie was exiled during this time, but he returned to Ethiopia after the Italians were defeated. He continued to lead Ethiopia until his overthrow in 1974. This photograph is a testament to the grandeur and significance of Haile Selassie's coronation, an event that marked the beginning of a new era for Ethiopia and its people. The image captures the regal presence of the emperor, surrounded by his courtiers and dignitaries, as he is crowned in the presence of his people. The intricate details of the imperial regalia and the solemn expressions of those in attendance add to the sense of history and tradition that this moment represents.
