EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 1: Gypaetos barbatus, the Lammergeier, or Bearded Vulture, illustrated in a stunning watercolor by Rajman Singh, part of Brian Hodgson's esteemed collection of birds and mammals of Nepal, dating back to the 19th century. This magnificent bird of prey, a resident of the Asian Alps and the Himalayas, is depicted with its distinctive bald head and heavy, hooked beak, which it uses to break open bones to access the marrow. The Lammergeier's anatomy is intricately detailed, showcasing its powerful build, broad wings, and muscular belly, all essential for its unique scavenging habits. The Lammergeier's face is expressive, with piercing eyes and a slight downward curve to its beak, giving it an intense and focused appearance. The bird perches confidently on a branch, its cream and brown plumage providing excellent camouflage against the rocky terrain of its mountainous habitat. The artist, Rajman Singh, expertly captures the delicate anatomy of the bird's bones, visible through the translucent skin of its wings, adding an element of intrigue and depth to the illustration. Brian Hodgson, a renowned naturalist and explorer, amassed an impressive collection of over 11,000 specimens during his travels through Nepal between 1821 and 1851. This watercolor, along with the rest of his collection, is now housed in the Natural History Museum in London, providing a valuable record of the natural history of Nepal during the 19th century. The Lammergeier, a member of the Accipitridae family and the Accipitriformes order, is a fascinating and important species, and this illustration serves as a testament to its beauty and significance in the natural world.
