Critics accused him of being overly cautious and inflexible, and some believed that his adherence to the Schlieffen Plan, which aimed to avoid a two-front war, ultimately led to the disastrous beginning of World War I. Regardless, Moltke's legacy as a military genius and architect of modern warfare remains undisputed.
