EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the intense and focused gaze of Samuel J. Tilden, who served as the Governor of New York from 1875 to 1876. Tilden, born on February 9, 1814, in New Lebanon, New York, was a prominent Democratic politician and lawyer. He rose to prominence in the Democratic Party during the Civil War era, serving as the Chairman of the Democratic National Committee from 1865 to 1868. Tilden's political career reached new heights when he was elected as the Governor of New York in 1874. The portrait, taken around 1874, shows Tilden in the prime of his political career, with a stern expression and a well-groomed beard and mustache. He is dressed in the formal attire of the time, wearing a dark suit and a crisp white shirt. Tilden's tenure as Governor was marked by his efforts to modernize New York State's infrastructure, including the construction of new schools, the expansion of the state's university system, and the establishment of the New York State Museum. He also advocated for civil service reform and the separation of church and state. Despite his accomplishments as Governor, Tilden is best known for his role in the controversial presidential election of 1876. After the election, there was a dispute over the electoral votes in Florida, South Carolina, and Louisiana. Tilden, who had won the popular vote, was initially declared the winner, but the electoral votes from these three states were in dispute. The election ultimately went to a joint session of Congress, where Tilden lost the votes of one Republican member, giving the presidency to Rutherford B. Hayes. Despite this setback, Tilden remained a respected figure in Democratic politics and continued to advocate for progressive causes until his death on December 12, 1886. This portrait serves as a reminder of Tilden's significant contributions to New York State and the Democratic Party during a pivotal period in American history.
