Originally named the Pelican, the ship was later renamed the Golden Hind in recognition of the lion and hind emblem of Queen Elizabeth I, who granted Drake a royal charter for his daring voyage. The sight of the Golden Hind returning to England, laden with treasure, was a triumphant moment in English history. The ship and its crew were hailed as heroes, and Drake was knighted by the Queen.
