EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the legendary Apache leader Geronimo, born around 1829, during one of his final buffalo hunts. Geronimo, whose name means "one who yawns" in the Apache language, is known for leading a sensational campaign against the encroaching white settlers in the American Southwest between 1885 and 1886. The image portrays Geronimo on horseback, dressed in traditional Native American attire, with a rifle in hand. The powerful buffalo herd can be seen in the background, providing a stark contrast to the lone hunter and his mount. The scene is reminiscent of the vast plains that once stretched across the Great Plains, where the Apache and other Native American tribes hunted buffalo for sustenance and survival. Despite the peaceful appearance of this photograph, Geronimo's life was anything but tranquil. He and his followers resisted the forced relocation to reservations and fought against the United States military for several years. Geronimo's resistance ended in 1886 when he surrendered and was taken into custody, marking the end of the Apache Wars. This photograph is a poignant reminder of a bygone era, when Native American tribes lived in relative freedom on the vast American plains. It also serves as a testament to Geronimo's unyielding spirit and his determination to protect his people and their way of life.
