This evocative photograph captures the grim reality of the Third Battle of the Aisne during World War I, as German transport drivers and their horses don gas masks in preparation for the advance on Soissons in 1918. The Western Front had seen the devastating use of chemical weapons, and both sides were forced to adapt to the new and deadly battlefield conditions. In this image, the drivers, dressed in their heavy winter coats and armed with rifles, protect themselves and their animals from the choking gas that could prove fatal in mere minutes. The horses, too, wear makeshift masks, their eyes covered with cloth to prevent the irritants from reaching their eyes.
