He quickly gained recognition for his skill and was soon commissioned by prominent figures of the day, including the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, the Earl of Derby, and the Prime Minister, William Pitt the Younger. Romney's portraits were characterized by their lifelike quality and expressive use of color. He often used a technique called "fresco secco," which involved applying oil paint to a dry plaster ground, giving his works a unique texture and depth. This technique can be seen in the intricately detailed features and richly colored garments of the subject in this print. Despite his success, Romney faced financial difficulties towards the end of his career due to extravagant living and a series of bad investments. He died in poverty in 1802, but his legacy as a master painter lived on. Today, his works can be found in museums and private collections around the world, including the National Portrait Gallery in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
