This print depicts Diego Riano, also known as Martín Gainza (1495-1534), a renowned Spanish architect and sculptor of the Renaissance period. The image, captured in 1534, shows Riano standing before the magnificent Seville Cathedral, a testament to his significant contribution to the city's architectural landscape. Born in Seville, Riano studied under the influential architect Alonso de Covarrubias and later became a master mason in the Seville Cathedral workshop. His unique Plateresque style, characterized by its intricate ornamentation and delicate detail, can be seen in various structures throughout Andalusia, including the Chapel of the Savior in the Seville Cathedral and the Hospital de la Caridad in Seville. In 1534, Riano was appointed as the chief architect of the Seville Cathedral, a position he held until his death in 1556. During his tenure, he oversaw the completion of the Giralda Tower and the construction of the Sierpes Bridge. His influence extended beyond Seville, as he was also involved in the design of the Church of San Francisco de Asis in Cordoba and the Church of San Pedro in Granada.
