EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored illustration depicts the fruit and leaves of the Alexander apple, Malus domestica, from Charles McIntosh's Flora and Pomona, published in 1829. The Scottish gardener and author, McIntosh (1794-1864), was renowned for his work with European aristocracy and royalty, and his extensive knowledge of horticulture led him to write numerous books on gardening. The illustration was drawn by the talented botanical artist, Edwin Dalton Smith (fl. 1820s), and engraved by Watts. Smith was known for his intricate and detailed botanical drawings, which were often published in various botanical works of the time. The Alexander apple, also known as the Transparent apple, is a rare and beautiful variety of Malus domestica. Its fruit is characterized by its translucent, almost glass-like appearance, and it is believed to have originated in the Caucasus Mountains. The leaves of the Alexander apple tree are depicted here in their full, vibrant green glory, contrasting beautifully with the delicate, blushed pink hues of the apple. This illustration is a stunning example of the intricate detail and artistry that was common in botanical illustrations of the 19th century. The use of handcoloring adds an additional layer of beauty and depth to the already impressive work, making it a valuable addition to any botanical or horticultural collection.
