EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored print depicts French cavalrymen during the reign of King Louis XIII in the 17th century, as captured in Sebastien Bourdon's painting. The image was meticulously reproduced through lithography by A. Didier, L. Flameng, and F. Laguillermie, and handcolored by E. Lechevallier-Chevignard. The print is a part of the "Historical costumes of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries" series published in Paris in 1867 by Georges Duplessis. Duplessis was a curator of the Prints department at the Bibliotheque nationale, while Lechevallier-Chevignard was an artist, book illustrator, and interior designer. He was also named professor at the National School of Decorative Arts in 1874. This series was a continuation of the earlier work on the costumes of the 12th to 15th centuries published by Camille Bonnard and Paul Mercuri from 1830. The French cavalrymen in the print are dressed in their full regalia, with elaborate armor and ornate clothing. Their horses are adorned with intricate trappings and decorations. The image offers a glimpse into the grandeur and opulence of the French military during the 17th century, a time of great political and cultural significance in European history. The meticulous attention to detail in the print makes it a valuable historical resource and an aesthetically pleasing work of art.
