EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite miniature painting depicts Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II Hohenstaufen (1194-1250) in an intimate scene as he receives a hawk as a gift. Frederick, who ruled as Duke of Swabia from 1212 to 1216 and as Holy Roman Emperor from 1197 to 1250, was known for his extensive knowledge and passion for the art of falconry. The hawk, a symbol of power and nobility, is presented to him by an attendant in this frontispiece of the French translation of his treatise on falconry, "De arte venandi cum avibus" (On Hunting with Birds), which was written around 1240. The illustration, created by the Master of Bruges in 1482, is a stunning example of Renaissance art. The interior setting, with its rich colors and intricate details, provides a sense of intimacy and elegance, showcasing the grandeur of the imperial court. The scene is filled with a sense of anticipation and excitement, as Frederick prepares to embark on a day of falconry, surrounded by his loyal companions and the beauty of nature.
