Francis R. Shunk: A Dedicated Public Servant and Governor of Pennsylvania This striking portrait captures the distinguished visage of Francis R. Shunk, who served as the 25th Governor of Pennsylvania from 1895 to 1899. Born on April 12, 1839, in York County, Pennsylvania, Shunk began his political career as a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1868, at the age of just 29. He went on to serve in various capacities within the state government, including as a member of the State Senate and as the President Judge of the Court of Common Pleas. Shunk's tenure as governor was marked by his commitment to education and economic development. He advocated for the establishment of a state board of education and worked to improve the public school system. In addition, he supported the construction of new state buildings, including the State Capitol Annex and the Pennsylvania State Museum. During his time in office, Shunk also faced significant challenges, including a severe economic depression and labor unrest. He worked to address these issues through a combination of financial measures and diplomacy, ultimately helping to stabilize the state's economy and maintain peace in the workforce. After leaving office, Shunk continued to serve his community as a judge and as a trustee of various educational institutions. He passed away on March 25, 1914, at the age of 74, leaving behind a legacy as a dedicated public servant and a champion of education and economic development in Pennsylvania.
