This evocative photograph captures the poignant moment of the Allied Intervention Force in northern Russia, in the bitter winter of 1919. The Russian Civil War, which began in 1917 following the Bolshevik Revolution, had reached a critical juncture as the White Movement, the last bastion of the Russian Imperial Army and other anti-Bolshevik forces, was on the brink of defeat. In response, the Allied Powers, including Britain, France, and the United States, sent troops to support the White Movement in their fight against the Bolsheviks.
