EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking oil on canvas painting, created by the Spanish artist Josèp Carbonero in 1888, depicts a pivotal moment in the complex history of the Mediterranean world. The image captures the arrival of Roger de Flor, a Catalan knight and military adventurer, in Constantinople at the behest of Emperor Andronicus II Palaeologus. Roger de Flor, born in 1267 as the son of a German falconer, had gained a formidable reputation as a military leader with his 8,000 Almogavar soldiers. The Almogavars were a unique military force, known for their agility and adaptability in various terrains. When Andronicus II sought to strengthen his military forces, he invited Roger de Flor to Constantinople, where the Catalan knight was welcomed with open arms. The painting beautifully captures the moment of their arrival, with Roger de Flor leading his troops through the gates of Constantinople, while Emperor Andronicus II, dressed in imperial robes, stands at the entrance to welcome them. The realism of the painting is evident in the intricate details of the soldiers' armor, the textures of their clothing, and the expressions on their faces. This historical moment marked the beginning of a significant period in the relationship between the Byzantine Empire and Catalonia. Roger de Flor's arrival led to the establishment of a Catalan colony in Constantinople, which would last for over a century. The influence of the Catalan presence in the Byzantine Empire can still be seen today in various aspects of the city's architecture, language, and culture.
