Flight simulator in use, RAF Lyneham, Wiltshire
A flight simulator in use at RAF Lyneham, Wiltshire. Before computers, flight simulators used actual models of different airfields in order to train pilots. The model used here was of the RAF base on Gan Island in the Indian Ocean. A colour TV camera relayed a picture of the scale model to a screen in the mock up of a Hercules Transport aircraft. Detail on the model was so precise that final work had to be carried out under a magnifying lens. Date: circa 1976

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph from the 1970s, we witness a flight simulator in action at RAF Lyneham in Wiltshire, England. Before the advent of computers and digital technology, flight simulators relied on intricately detailed models of various airfields to train pilots. The model showcased here represents RAF Base on Gan Island in the Indian Ocean. The image reveals a colour TV camera projecting a live feed of the meticulously crafted model onto a screen within the mock-up of a Hercules Transport aircraft cockpit. The level of detail on the model was so extraordinary that final adjustments were required to be made under the scrutiny of a magnifying lens. This photograph transports us back to the 1970s, a time when the aviation industry was on the brink of a technological revolution. The men in the image, focused and attentive, embody the dedication and precision required to master the art of flying. The Hercules aircraft's cockpit, filled with an array of controls and instruments, underscores the complexity of the task at hand. The use of flight simulators, such as the one depicted here, played a pivotal role in preparing pilots for the challenges they would face in the real world. This photograph is a testament to the ingenuity and commitment of those who worked tirelessly to ensure the safety and success of military aviation operations. Circa 1976.
