EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing photograph, dated 1864, captures two unique and fascinating fish species: the Five-Bearded Rockling (Ciliata mustela) and the Four-Bearded Rockling (Enchelyopus cimbrius). Both fish are native to the North Atlantic and Mediterranean seas, and were commonly found in the waters around Europe during the Victorian era. The Five-Bearded Rockling, also known as the Five-Barbed Rockling or Mustelus Rockling, is easily identified by the five distinct barbels or "beards" located beneath its lower jaw. These barbels help the fish to detect prey in the sandy seafloor. The fish in this image displays a striking orange coloration, with dark spots covering its body. The Four-Bearded Rockling, on the other hand, gets its name from the four barbels found on each side of its lower jaw. These barbels are less distinct than those of the Five-Bearded Rockling, and are often hidden among the fish's gill covers. The Four-Bearded Rockling is typically brownish-gray in color, with a white belly and dark spots along its sides. This photograph offers a glimpse into the natural history of these two fascinating fish species, which were likely of great interest to naturalists and marine biologists during the 1860s. The image is a reminder of the rich biodiversity of the marine world, and the importance of documenting and preserving the natural wonders of the past for future generations to appreciate. The photograph itself is a testament to the advances in underwater photography during the Victorian era, which allowed scientists and explorers to study marine life in greater detail than ever before. Today, these images serve as valuable records of the natural world, providing insights into the biology, behavior, and ecology of the many amazing species that inhabit our oceans.
