As the Bourbon rule of the Two Sicilies came to an end and the Kingdom of Italy began to take shape, Giuseppina, also known as Giuseppina Garibaldi or Giuseppina di Marino, stood defiantly against the Neapolitan forces. With a cannon in hand, she manned the fortifications of the city, bravely resisting the enemy's advance. The scene depicted in this engraving is believed to have taken place during the Battle of Catania, which took place on May 11, 1860.
