Born in 1852, French rose through the ranks to become a field marshal in 1900, and was knighted in 1901, thereafter being known as Sir John French. He served in various military campaigns, including the Second Boer War and the First World War, where he held the position of Commander-in-Chief of the British Expeditionary Force from 1914 to 1915.
