EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored engraving, titled 'Female Costume from the Time of Queen Anne' (1702-1714), is a stunning illustration of the fashionable attire worn by women during the early 18th century in England. The image, drawn by Charles Martin and etched by Leopold Martin, is taken from the comprehensive work 'Civil Costume of England from the Conquest to the Present Period.' The detailed and intricately designed costume depicted in the print consists of a fitted bodice, adorned with delicate roses and other floral motifs, which cinches at the waist to accentuate the hourglass figure. The long, flowing sleeves are also embellished with roses and other ornate embroidery, adding an air of elegance and opulence to the ensemble. Beneath the bodice, the wearer dons a full, voluminous petticoat, which is gathered at the waist and falls gracefully to the ground. The petticoat is adorned with intricate patterns and designs, further enhancing the overall beauty and sophistication of the costume. The Martins, who created this illustration, were renowned artists and engravers of their time. They meticulously researched their subjects, drawing inspiration from various sources such as tapestries, monumental effigies, illuminated manuscripts, and portraits. The result is a highly accurate and authentic representation of the fashion of the time, providing a valuable insight into the history of costume and fashion in England during the 18th century.
