EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures the enigmatic figure of Jean-Pierre Felicien Mallefille (1813-1868), a French writer and diplomat who left an indelible mark on history. Mallefille's life was as rich and complex as the pages of a novel. He was a man of letters, an accomplished writer who penned numerous works on literature, history, and politics. But Mallefille's most notable achievement came during a tumultuous period in French history - the Commune of Paris in 1871. As the Consul of France in Lisbon, Mallefille received word of the impending destruction of the Royal Library at Versailles by the radical forces of the Commune. Moved by the importance of preserving France's cultural heritage, Mallefille embarked on a daring mission to save the priceless collection. He managed to secure a train to transport the precious books to Bordeaux, where they were eventually taken to safety in England. Mallefille's heroism during this time was not his only brush with fame. He was also the sometime lover of the renowned French author George Sand. Their passionate affair was the stuff of legend, with Sand immortalizing their time together in her letters and novels. This photograph, taken during Mallefille's later years, captures the intensity and intelligence of a man who lived a life full of intrigue and adventure. His legacy as a writer, diplomat, and savior of France's literary heritage continues to inspire and captivate scholars and history buffs alike.
