FA Cup winners - Bolton Wanderers, 1923

FA Cup winners in 1923, Bolton Wanderers. The 1923 FA Cup final was the first to be held in the newly-opened (orignal) Wembley Stadium, known as the Empire Stadium, but was somewhat marred by the chaos of an estimated 300000 spectators gaining entrance to the 125000 capacity ground. The back of the card reads: " It was the most unsatisfactory match ever decided in the history of the Competition. The new Stadium arrangements were hopelessly inadequate. The crowd were encroaching on the field of play when Jack opened the scoring for Bolton." Bolton eventually beat West Ham United 2-0. Association Cup Winners Players Cigarettes card set, c. 1930. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the historic moment when Bolton Wanderers lifted the FA Cup in 1923, marking their first victory in the prestigious English football competition. The scene is set at the newly-opened Wembley Stadium, then known as the Empire Stadium, which held 125,000 spectators. However, the day was marred by chaos as an estimated 300,000 fans attempted to gain entrance, resulting in an unsatisfactory match. The back of the card reads, "It was the most unsatisfactory match ever decided in the history of the Competition. The new Stadium arrangements were hopelessly inadequate. The crowd were encroaching on the field of play when Jack opened the scoring for Bolton." Despite the chaotic conditions, Bolton managed to secure a 2-0 victory over West Ham United. This photograph is part of a Cigarette card set produced in the 1930s, showcasing the Association Cup Winners Players. The set was a popular collectible item during that era, and this card features some of the most notable figures from Bolton Wanderers' FA Cup-winning team. The image offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when football history was being made at Wembley Stadium.
