EDITORS COMMENTS
Evelyn Brent: A Hollywood Star of Stage and Screen (1899-1975) Evelyn Brent, born on August 2, 1899, was an American actress who captivated audiences both on stage and on the silver screen during Hollywood's golden age. This stunning photograph captures Brent in her prime, exuding confidence and glamour. Brent began her acting career on the stage, performing in stock companies and touring productions before making the transition to films in the late 1920s. She quickly gained notice for her sultry performances in a series of pre-Code films, including "Merrily We Go to Hell" (1932) and "Baby Face" (1933), which showcased her ability to play seductive and manipulative characters. Despite her success in Hollywood, Brent's personal life was marked by tragedy. In 1934, her husband, actor John Halliday, was found dead in their home, an apparent suicide. Brent was later acquitted of any involvement in his death, but the scandal damaged her career. Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, Brent continued to act in films, often in supporting roles. She also appeared on Broadway and in summer stock productions. In 1953, she made her final film appearance in "The War of the Worlds," directed by Byron Haskin. Brent passed away on March 2, 1975, leaving behind a legacy as a talented and versatile actress who left an indelible mark on the history of American film and theater. This photograph, taken in the late 1920s, captures her in her prime, a shining star of Hollywood's golden age.
