EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts an equestrian servant from the 18th century France, as rendered in a painting by Carle Van Loo and brought to life through the skilled hands of handcolorist E. Lechevallier-Chevignard and lithographers A. Didier, L. Flameng, and F. Laguillermie. The image is taken from Georges Duplessis's seminal work, "Costumes historiques des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siecles" (Historical costumes of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries), published in Paris in 1867. The servant, dressed in the traditional livery of the time, stands resolutely by his master's horse, his eyes fixed on the ground as a sign of respect and attentiveness. His attire consists of a long, double-breasted coat with gold buttons, a waistcoat, a white shirt, and a pair of breeches. The coat is adorned with a red sash, adding a pop of color to the otherwise monochromatic ensemble. The servant wears a tricorn hat, a common headgear during the 18th century, with a black ribbon tied under the chin. The print offers a fascinating glimpse into the opulent world of 18th-century French equestrian culture, where servants played an essential role in maintaining the grandeur and orderliness of the aristocratic lifestyle. The intricate details of the servant's uniform, the horse's tack, and the surrounding landscape are all rendered with remarkable precision and attention to historical accuracy, making this print a valuable resource for scholars and enthusiasts of fashion history.
