English Cathedrals - Peterborough- arches of the Nave - Three tiers of arches in Nave. Part of Box 144 Boswell Collection - English Cathedrals. Peterborough Cathedral, properly the Cathedral Church of St Peter, St Paul and St Andrew also known as Saint Peters Cathedral in the United Kingdom is the seat of the Bishop of Peterborough, dedicated to Saint Peter, Saint Paul and Saint Andrew, whose statues look down from the three high gables of the famous West Front. Although it was founded in the Anglo-Saxon period, its architecture is mainly Norman, following a rebuilding in the 12th century. With Durham and Ely Cathedrals, it is one of the most important 12th-century buildings in England to have remained largely intact, despite extensions and restoration. Date: circa 1900

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the breathtaking arches of the Nave at Peterborough Cathedral, a significant religious site in the United Kingdom. Dedicated to Saint Peter, Saint Paul, and Saint Andrew, the cathedral is also known as Saint Peter's Cathedral and is the seat of the Bishop of Peterborough. The cathedral's history dates back to the Anglo-Saxon period, but the current structure is primarily Norman, following a rebuilding in the 12th century. The three tiers of arches in the Nave are a testament to the architectural grandeur of this historic place of worship. The arches support the weight of the cathedral's impressive vaulted ceiling, creating an awe-inspiring sense of space and light. The intricate stonework and delicate carvings on the arches add to the cathedral's rich artistic heritage. Peterborough Cathedral, along with Durham and Ely Cathedrals, is one of the most important 12th-century buildings in England to have remained largely intact, despite extensions and restoration. The cathedral's West Front, with its famous high gables and statues of the three saints, is a popular tourist attraction and a symbol of the region's proud history and cultural heritage. This photograph, taken circa 1900, is part of the Boswell Collection of English Cathedrals from Mary Evans Prints Online. It offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back in time to experience the beauty and majesty of one of England's most cherished religious sites.
